On Wednesday (24), a woman identified as Bárbara Cristina da Silva, 33, was stabbed to death in Cantanhede, in the interior of Maranhão. The main suspect in the crime is her ex-partner, Kerlio Alves Pereira, 30.

According to the Civil Police of Maranhão (PC-MA), the crime occurred at around 7 am, on Benedito Lopes Avenue, in the center of Cantanhede. Bárbara had gone to her ex-partner 's house to see her children when she was attacked by Kerlio. Originally from Capela, in Alagoas, Bárbara was stabbed and died at the scene. After the attack, Kerlio attempted suicide, stabbing himself in the chest and abdomen.

SUSPECT WAS ARRESTED

Kerlio was rescued and taken to the Santa Filomena Municipal Hospital. After receiving treatment , he was arrested and sent to the Itapecuru Mirim prison.

Witnesses reported that Kerlio already had a police record for assaulting Bárbara Cristina.

With Bárbara's death, the number of cases of femicide registered in Maranhão in 2024 rises to 33.
