Three criminals took hostages in a robbery at a house on Rua dos Manacás, in the Morumbi neighborhood of São Paulo, on Tuesday morning (20). After an exchange of fire with military police, one of the robbers died at the scene. Another criminal died after the car in which he was fleeing caught fire. The residents were released unharmed.

Military police were called at around 7.20am to attend the scene. According to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the criminals were holding residents of a residence hostage when the street guard clashed with one of the robbers and hit him in the face.

The criminal was taken to USP hospital, where he remained under medical care. The second robber was involved in an exchange of fire with the police and was shot and killed on the spot.

Another robber tried to escape in a 2009 Volkswagen Passat, but the car caught fire and the man was charred to death.

A gun was found at the scene and the case is ongoing and will be presented at the 34th Police Station (Vila Sônia).

Morumbi was the neighborhood where robberies increased the most in the city in 2023. The area of the 89th DP (Portal do Morumbi) registered 1,941 incidents last year compared to 1,412 in 2022, an increase of 37.46%. Estadão showed that the routine of violence in the region has frightened residents and caused businesses to close their doors early.
