This Thursday (15), in northern São Paulo, an encounter with the Military Police ended in the death of Camila Pereira. According to preliminary information, she approached the officers holding a knife. Despite orders to drop the weapon, she continued to advance until one of the officers shot her.

The outcome was irreversible: Camila died.

Neighbors reported that the woman was already carrying the knife before encountering the police. Apparently, the situation caused alarm in the community and prompted a police response. However, there is a fundamental difference between explaining what happened and automatically justifying a fatal outcome. The presence of a knife is one element of the incident; it does not, in itself, constitute a definitive explanation for all the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Following her death, the area was cordoned off, and teams from the Homicide and Personal Protection Department (DHPP) were called to the scene. The case was recorded as a death resulting from police intervention.

The officer who fired the shot was arrested on the spot, and his weapon was confiscated. Security camera footage from the area will be analyzed, and family members and witnesses will be summoned to testify.

Now comes the moment when the facts must speak more clearly than the various accounts. What does the footage show? What was the distance between Camila and the officers? Under what conditions was the shot fired? Were there other options available at the time?

These questions cannot be answered through speculation, let alone hasty conclusions. The investigation must clarify the sequence of events, evaluate the conduct of those involved, and determine where responsibility lies.

Camila is dead. No investigation can change that. But the gravity of the outcome demands rigor, transparency, and concrete answers.

When an encounter with the police ends in death, it is not enough simply to file a report and wait for tensions to subside. The facts must be clarified.
