The 2001 Seoul Olympic Bridge helicopter crash occurred on May 29, 2001, when a South Korean Army CH-47D Chinook helicopter struck a decorative sculpture and plunged into the Han River while preparing to host the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
The helicopter was attempting to lift and mount a large, torch-shaped structural sculpture onto the top of the Olympic Bridge tower as a symbolic monument leading up to the 2002 World Cup.
Heavy sling-load weight, difficult wind conditions, and a tight positioning approach caused the rotor blades to strike the monument structure.
The aircraft lost control, broke apart in mid-air, and crashed down into the river;
3 crew members killed (no civilian injuries or deaths on the ground).
The incident was captured live by news crews and bystanders, making it one of the most widely circulated aviation accident videos.
