For anyone wondering: THis is a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion) .
It's a propane tank. Propane gas is stored under pressure as a liquid. If heated (like during this hot area), pressure increases. The relief valve helps vent propane gas to prevent an explosion. However, if there's already fire near by, the venting gas ignites immediately — hence the torch you see.
- DO NOT try to smother the flame with a pot or blanket. That won't work — the gas is under pressure and will keep igniting as it vents.
- DO NOT spray water on the flame directly hoping to put it out — it’s not a normal fire. Water won't stop the gas escaping.
- DO NOT approach the tank. If the metal shell gets too hot, the tank could explode.
What should you do?
- Spray the tank itself with water to cool it (not the flame)
- Allow the flame to continue burning safely while relieving pressure.
- Call 9/11 for help.
