The incident took place around 2:00 p.m. m. on Friday, May 17, when the victims were traveling on a motorcycle along the road near the Guatemala sector, before the Güengüe bridge.

The first hypotheses suggest that the armed groups responsible for the attack had left the explosive abandoned on the road, with the alleged intention of attacking the public force. According to local authorities, "the minor died at the scene due to the severity of his injuries."

Images from the explosion site show the three people lying on the ground, including the child; The two adults were immediately transferred to the municipal hospital where they are currently receiving medical attention and will later be transferred to a more complex clinic in the city of Cali. According to preliminary versions, the motorcycle taxi driver, the woman and her son were traveling on a motorcycle when they were surprised by the explosion.

Based on the reports known so far, the injuries suffered by the adults are critical, which has generated great concern among the inhabitants of the sector. The attack seemed to be directed at the National Army, which minutes before had mobilized along that route. The authorities are investigating those responsible for the attack, which would have probably been perpetrated by the Dagoberto Ramos structure, of the Central General Staff of the FARC dissidents, commanded by alias Iván Mordisco.

For his part, General Federico Mejía, commander of the Cauca Specific Command, confirmed that the incident occurred in the Guatemala sector, Munda village. "From a human source it is reported that a highly powerful explosive device was activated in the area of interference of the GaOr Dagoberto Ramos, who apparently intended to attack the public force, but in their failed attempt they carried out the terrorist act, murdering three people. Apparently one of them is a minor,” explained General Mejía. The mayor of Miranda, Walter Zúñiga, also spoke out on the matter, stating that “unfortunately our civilian population is once again the victim of an explosive device; This is already an insane situation.”

It is worth remembering that in this same town, on May 10, a vehicle loaded with explosives detonated in the Porvenir neighborhood. Although there were no injuries, the blast wave killed a nearby stray dog. The attack directed against the Armed Forces occurred in the urban area of the municipality of Miranda, where the attack was carried out with a modified vehicle that launched explosives against a military base.

Although the objective was to directly impact the military installations, the explosive devices, known as tatucos, did not achieve their goal. One of the explosives passed over the target, while another exploded inside the vehicle. According to the commander of the Specific Command of Cauca, Brigadier General Federico Mejía, “from the El Porvenir neighborhood towards the Command Post of the Specific Command of Cauca, one of the tatucos passed over the command post, falling a considerable distance and the another exploded inside the vehicle.”

General Mejía attributed the attack to the strategy known as “crazy bomb,” an insurgent tactic that seeks to destabilize using improvised projectiles. This incident constitutes the third terrorist attack in Miranda during 2024, following a car bomb attack that occurred on April 11 near a Police station, which resulted in injuries to two people.
