Brovary explosion: Suspect faces life imprisonment for injuring police officer with hand grenade
A 37-year-old resident of the city of Brovary, Kyiv Oblast, has been served a notice of suspicion for throwing a hand grenade at a police officer during the May 11 pursuit, the press service of the National Police reported on May 12.
The suspect has been charged under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
Part 1 of Art. 348 (attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer)
Part 1 of Art. 263 (illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives).
If convicted, the maximum penalty for these charges is up to 15 years or life imprisonment.
The suspect, who had prior convictions for property crimes and drug possession, was already wanted by the police at the time of the crime.
On May 11, the city mayor Ihor Sapozhko reported downtown explosion injuring two people, including a police officer.
Law enforcement officers were responding to a call about vandalism when the suspect attempted to flee, according to regional police. During the pursuit, the suspect threw a hand grenade toward an officer, injuring both the officer and himself.
