Bodycam video of a deadly shooting in Lorain was released Thursday, showing the moments US Marshals opened fire on a man who allegedly attacked them with a “wooden table leg.”

Lorain police hosted the press conference Thursday afternoon, saying they would not take any questions until a later date when the investigation of the incident is complete. They added that they released the video to "show transparency to the public."

The incident happened a week ago on April 18 when the US Marshals were executing a warrant at a house in the 900 block of West 21st Street. 34-year-old Derrick Smith was wanted for allegedly violating federal parole, stemming from a drug trafficking case.

According to a press release from the Lorain Police Department, US Marshals task force members were trying to place Smith into custody in an upstairs bedroom of the house when he attacked them with what was first thought to be a baseball bat, but later clarified as a "wooden table leg."

In addition, Lorain police said in the press conference that Smith was holding a knife.

Officials attempted to subdue Smith with the use of a Taser, but that proved unsuccessful as Lorain police noted that the situation "escalated," leading to Smith being fatally shot by the US Marshals. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lorain police noted that none of their officers were involved in the use-of-force incident.

A spokesperson for the US Marshals previously told 3News that two task force members suffered injuries to the head and a third was injured in the arm. All were taken to Mercy Hospital in Lorain for treatment and have been released.
