The driver of a minibus that ran over and killed five participants in a procession in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in the Metropolitan Region of Recife (PE), this Easter Sunday, contacted the local authorities and said he intends to report himself to the police. The driver reportedly fled the scene of the accident after being run over.
The information was given in an official note released by the city hall, this Monday. The accident also left 32 people injured, all from the pilgrimage, according to the Fire Department. No victims were reported inside the vehicle.
The dead were three women, aged 66, 53 and 51, and two men, aged 68 and 52. Among the injured, 26 are still hospitalized, nine at Restauração Hospital, seven at Dom Hélder Hospital, one at Otávio de Freitas Hospital, one in a private hospital and six at Imbiribeira UPA and two at Ibura UPA.
The vehicle was traveling on line 118, which connects the Marcos Freire and Barra de Jangada neighborhoods, towards the Church of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes. The minibus has authorization from the city hall to operate as a complementary vehicle in the municipality, and was carrying passengers at the time of the accident.
The collision occurred on a stretch known as "Ladeira da Adelaide", on Avenida Barreto de Menezes, close to a high school, at around 5pm.
"The information gathered so far, at the scene, is that the bus driver lost control of the vehicle when going down a slope on Avenida Barreto de Menezes, he still avoided the vehicles, but hit the faithful", informed the City of Jaboatão of Guararapes.
The governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra (PSDB), published a note in solidarity with the victims. "My condolences to the faithful and family victims of the collision that occurred today during a procession in Jaboatão, which killed at least four people (the number later rose to five dead)," she wrote. "Sad to hear the news this Easter Sunday," she added.
