On April 8, 2023, a 65-year-old driver, identified as Bang XXX, was driving a drunk car in a school zone in Dunsan-dong, Seogu, Daejeon, South Korea. He lost control of his car and crashed into four children who were walking on the sidewalk.
As a result of the crash, 9-year-old Bae Seung-ah was taken to the hospital in cardiac arrest and died. The other three children were injured but are expected to recover.
According to police, Bang's blood alcohol level was over 0.08%, which is the legal limit for driving under the influence. Bang admitted to drinking alcohol before driving.
Police have requested an arrest warrant for Bang on charges of causing injury and death in a traffic accident.
This accident is a shocking case of drunk driving that resulted in the death of a child in a school zone. The victim's family and citizens are demanding severe punishment for drunk drivers.
