SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Video of the moments leading up to Sacramento County deputies shooting and killing a machete-wielding man was released on Tuesday.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said the man who was shot and killed by the deputy was holding a machete and was advancing toward the deputy. Authorities told KCRA 3 that the incident first began as a welfare check, saying that on Sept. 28 around 8:40 a.m., they received a call from a woman inside a home near Enrico Boulevard and Fruitridge Road.
The woman stated that her husband wanted to kill himself and had a machete in his hands. According to a news release from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, "When the call-taker asked about the subject's mental health, the caller stated that her husband did not have a mental health condition."
She also told deputies that he did not take medications for mental health and did not have a history of violence toward anyone. He had also never been placed on a mental health hold.
Of the roughly 11-minute-long video released by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, only 23 seconds comprised the actual interaction between the deputy and the man, later identified as 55-year-old Jaime Naranjo.
The video shows the deputy park and exit his vehicle, where he was greeted by the woman who called dispatchers. She told the deputy the man was inside.
As the deputy was approaching the front door, he spots Naranjo, who then starts walking toward the deputy and the woman, his machete raised.
As Naranjo is approaching using one hand to cover his eyes, the woman screams "Jaime!" while the deputy pushed her aside.
The deputy can be heard telling Naranjo repeatedly to drop the machete. When Naranjo was seen standing over the woman, who is now on the floor with her hands up in defense, the deputy fired five shots at Naranjo.
The rest of the video included a summary from department spokesperson Rodney Grassmann, along with the original 911 call between dispatchers and the woman.
