There was probably a severe thermocline undercurrent, where the water acts like a vacuum.  
And in most cases the reason rescuing a drowning swimmer is difficult is they are in panic mode, so you have to knock them out literally to gain control and avoid what we saw here.

There's a rather funny reason they got in the water. Big Nigger Jim was strolling the streets when he saw an older white man standing next to the ledge with a rope and stick. The cracker was trying to fish out a piece of that driftwood that he really liked. After Big Nigger Jim watched the guy try for 10 minutes, he decided to help the white guy by hopping in to grab it for him. What he didn't know is that the currents in that type of waterway are extremely dangerous. Even a strong excellent swimmer would have a hard time swimming against it as it is pulling you down. You'll get exhausted very fast. I forgot how strong that particular current was. But it was at the very limits of anyone's capability. The proper way to give yourself better odds is to swim parallel to the current. The 2nd white cracker was also strolling the streets when he noticed Big Nigger Jim struggling in the water. So he too decided to help a stranger. That stranger fucked him rather hard and did what most idiotic drowning people do. Panic and push anyone trying to save them under while trying to use them to keep their head out of the water. You couple that with the current. He didn't have a chance. They didn't die because they were shitty swimmers or didn't know how to swim. They just made a mistake that would be easy to make. Unless you know anything about the currents. It doesn't look like a very dangerous action to jump in. The whole video is out there somewhere. I almost wanted to say it's unfortunate that Big Nigger Jim died while trying to help an old white cracker man. But the way he pushed the other cracker under shattered that thought. Dumb nigger and dumb cracker.
